“I don’t like to limit myself to one material or technique. Nature is forever evolving around us and I feel as an artist I need to also.” — Christy DeWitt
Nature is the common thread that ties all of DeWitt’s work together. The seasons dictate the forms and styles of work that she uses. Her natural transfer prints begin to evolve during the summer documenting the patterns and shapes of the natural world around her. Her watercolor paintings are created through the winter capturing the changes that nature cycles through including tides, seasons, and weather. DeWitt’s sculptures are constructed throughout the year with up-cycled or found goods. They emanate the possibilities that nature may become due to the excessive use and disposal of materials
DeWitt’s need to create and make art is as instinctual as breathing. Her body of work is not a literal reproduction of nature but a visual interpretation or translation of the things she sees and feels around her. The many facts and complexity of her work are expressed through the variety of materials and techniques she employs. Some works are painted, some printed and then painted, and others are created with fabric, fiber or rope.
Christy DeWitt is a versatile and educated artist with a depth of experience. Her focused studies began at the Emma Willard School and continued through the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) where Dewitt earned a BFA, concentrating in textile design. Her degree project explored the integration of design and complex weave structures on the Jacquard loom. For the next decade, DeWitt established herself as a successful textile designer in the foreign and domestic upholstery industry. To bring it all full circle, DeWitt achieved an MAE and currently shares her knowledge as an educator while continuing to evolve as an artist.
