Gretchen work's in a variety of styles and mediums, inspired by animals, specifically horses. While trained as a painter in college, she has run a full time business creating photorealistic pet commissions in oil and graphite for the past 25 years. The pride of grooming a horse to perfection or capturing the same in paint has been part of her work ethic since her youth spent with horses.
When life and stress combine, animals and art have been her escape. During the pandemic, she had time to explore her own style of painting, trying to move away from realism and attempting to abstract the equine form. "As a lifelong equestrian, I find their athleticism, power, fragility, spirit, beauty and sheer size stimulating, and I wanted to try to capture those nuances in my personal work." Her technique is developed from many years of painting them and a lifetime of riding them. Despite pushing a looser style, she still stays grounded in the form trying to not lose proportions. “I want you to see and feel the horse, without it being entirely distorted, but not exact either.” She describes it as sculpting their form with paint, color and line, creating a 3D depth on a 2D surface.
While horses have always been her muse in art and life, she has the same adoration for nature brought on from days spent outdoors taking care of horses. While more painterly than abstract, her focus is on the intense light and colors of the outdoors with the hope to entice the viewer into their own world, once again, less fixated on realism.
She is an award winning artist, represented by numerous galleries and is excited to be a new member of South Coast Artists and is looking forward to seeing you on the tour!
