Mike Munroe is a self taught painter and considers himself “formally self taught” in that he has spent countless hours with art books and discussions with trained artists. He works primarily with oils but lately has been delving into watercolor. His greatest artistic enjoyment comes from painting plein air being outdoors and hearing the sounds around him. Typically he sets up at a location of interest and paints until the painting is finished. On occasion he will paint from photographs if it’s too difficult to paint on location. He like most painters is trying to capture the light and mood of.a place. The painter who has inspired him the most is Emile Gruppe’. Stylistically his paintings have a raw freshness to them due in part to the time constraints of painting plein air and the fact that he feels that mood and sense of place take precedence over strict accuracy.
